Educate Together Curriculum
What are the School’s Curriculum aims?
In every area of the curriculum, the underlying aims are twofold:
- The full and harmonious development of the potential of each child.
- The promotion of cultural enrichment. Attitudes of self-confidence, self-awareness and self-respect are encouraged.
Mutual regard for each other and for each other’s viewpoints permeates the wide range of activities that are carried out within the school.
The Curriculum includes Gaeilge, English, Mathematics, SESE (Social, Environmental and Scientific Education) Music, Drama, Art and Craft, SPHE (Social, Personal, Health Education) Physical Education and Ethical Education.
Ethical Education is a key component of the Educate Together Model. The Learn Together Curriculum seeks to offer our students the opportunity to meaningfully and critically reflect upon the world around them. Ethical education focuses on questions of equality, justice, sustainability and active citizenship. The Learn Together Programme is designed to help children to understand the religious and other traditions that they will meet in their environment and to help them to be sensitive to the ultimate questions posed by life and to the dimension or mystery and wonder that underlies all human experience. The Learn Together Programme is not denominationally based. The school also facilitates groups of parents in the provision of denominational instruction, as required by them, for their children.
We welcome parents/guardians and extended families to our school to help out and/or share their experiences and expertise. Again, this serves to allow families to engage with and invest in their children’s education. Parents and Guardians who wish to do so, and who have the skills or knowledge, are encouraged to help the teachers carry out special projects or classes with the children. Cooperation and participation of parents/guardians in their children’s education is crucial in ensuring the children thrive and reach their full potential
We ensure clear communication with the wider school community through appropriate channels such as our website and Aladdin and a clear open-door policy.
In Cork Educate Together we embrace the participation and contribution of the wider community. Over the years we have established and developed strong relationships with our neighbours: UCC, Cork City Library, SHARE, Crawford Art Gallery, The Cricket Club, Lifetime Lab, Fitzgerald’s Park Museum, Cork Community Art Link, English Market (to name but a few).
It is imperative that our guiding vision is one where we reach a shared consensus on goals and expectations for our school as a learning community. We value broad and balanced curriculums. All of which allow for broader and more immediate use of our students’ skills, talents and abilities. Promoting such broad-based engagement ensures a kaleidoscope of talents are revealed as each student participates and contributes.
